Clarion 2009!

If you think you might be a fantasy/science fiction writer, or if you’re sure you are, and you have the time and the wherewithal to spend six weeks in a quasi-paradise doing nothing but writing and dissecting stories and talking about fiction, studying under a series of amazing writers who you just might have been idolizing for a while now, with 20-or-so other people from all walks of life who have more or less exactly the same aspirations and hopes and dreams as you do and will almost certainly imprint themselves on you in ways you couldn’t possibly have imagined … then you should apply for Clarion this year.

I attended Clarion in 2007, the first year it was in San Diego, and I’ve never felt so close to a group of people, or been so prolific, or learned so much, or felt so consistently elated. It was exhausting, yes, but not the kind of exhausting where it’s dinnertime and you’re still at your desk banging on whatever godforsaken widget you’ve been slaving over all day. It’s the kind of exhausting where you’re pouring everything you have into something you love and it’s sucking you dry and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Probably all of your hyperbole sensors are blaring right now, and, honestly, I don’t blame them. But believe me: it just sounds like hyperbole. Some things really are that good.

There’s a great lineup of instructors this year, it’s in sunny California, and you get to hang out with a bunch of cool people and become a better writer. What’s not to like?

The deadline is March 1st. Think about it.
